Three events are slated for the opening of the school year – V.I. Fathers Back to School Barbecue and Fun Day on Saturday, Aug. 27; the Back to School Days of Prayer on Saturday , Sept. 3, and Sunday, Sept. 4; and the V.I. Fathers March on Sept. 6, the first day of school for public schools in the territory. Organizers are encouraging fathers to take their children back to school starting on the first day.

Zika Update: 50 New Cases Reported; Health Plans Action Day

The V.I. Department of Health confirmed 50 new cases of Zika virus in the territory. According to the latest surveillance report, the number of cases went from 143 to 193 in the last week.

Two H.S. Seniors Among National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

On Sept. 11, officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship (NMS) Program. Kayla Clendinen and Portia Norkaitis, both high school seniors at V.I. Montessori School and Peter Gruber International Academy on St. Thomas, were among the semifinalists named in the 2014 NMS Program.
