Parks Free for National Parks Week

If enjoying St. Thomas Carnival isn’t on your agenda, St. John’s Trunk Bay Beach or St. Croix’s Fort Christiansvaern and Steeple Building might beckon. Admission is free until Sunday as the National Park Service celebrates National Park Week.

Trunk Bay is the only V.I. National Park facility that charges admission. It’s usually $4. The admission to Fort Christiansvaern and the Steeple Building in Christiansted National Historic Site is regularly $3 for both. Other park facilities on St. Croix are always free.

Joel Tutein, superintendent at Christiansted National Historic Site, said the fee free week is to show appreciation for the public’s support.

That said, he also pointed out that there is a donation box if the public was inclined to help.

On St. John, the park’s chief of interpretation, Paul Thomas, said the fee free week is to encourage people to enjoy the park.

“Get people outdoors,” he said.

Admission fees at all 397 national park facilities are waived in honor of National Park Week, which began April 21.

This year’s theme is “Picture Yourself in a National Park.”

“National Park Week is the perfect time to experience all that our national
parks have to offer,” Neil Mulholland, president and chief executive officer of the National Park Foundation, said in a press release.

“It is also an invitation to join the community of national park supporters,” he said. “Visit, volunteer or get involved with the Foundation or any one of the local friends groups that support our parks. Together, we can make this National Park Week one to remember.”
