HOMICIDES IN 2001

(1) Territory
Date of slaying: Jan. 3
Victim: Bryan Beaton, 37, a construction worker, was stabbed in the heart during a confrontation with his attacker. The stabbing took place where an auditorium for the East India Association is being built, a site at No. 1B-1 Estate Bellevue.

Date of slaying: Jan. 6
Victim: Llewelyn Ford, 48, was shot twice at approximately 10:30 a.m. during an argument with another man in Watergut.

Date of slaying: Jan. 19
Kenville Mills, believed to be in his late teens or early 20s, was shot to death following a verbal altercation on Hill Street in Christiansted.

Date of slaying: Feb. 4 (date body found)
Ernestine Vanterpool, 51, died of a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Her body was found in a car at Lindqvist beach. Police were seeking to determine if the death was a homicide or suicide.

Dale Jeffers 32, died of a gunshot wound to the lower abdomen. Jeffers’ body was found in Lower Hospital Ground near building 1B of the Berg’s Home housing community. He was the owner of Extreme Watersports Center at Coki Point.

Date of slaying: March 23
James "Scala" Furlong was shot in the head, back and lower hip. He died at the scene in Savan. Police had no motive or suspects at the time of the murder.

The bullet-riddled body of Carlos Colon, 22, of Lindbergh Bay was found in a car along a side road on Crown Mountain. The killing was described as an execution by police sources.

The body of Craig Bess was found in the early mornign hours in the back of a green Ford Ranger pickup truck on Garden Street. He had been shot in the head. Police said they had little information.

Marion Bischoff-Hensen died of a fractured skull after falling from the third floor balcony of the King Christian Hotel. No one has ever been charged in the case, but police have not deemed Bishoff-Hensen’s death as accidental.

Dion Benjamin was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds in a car near Watergut. Police had no leads at the time of the murder.

Hakem Salem, 27, died in a car on Garden Street of a gunshot wound to his head. The death may have been the result of a shootout. Police had taken a couple of men into custody following the shooting. It was not known at the time if they were involved in the murder.

Eduardo Marrero, 28, was shot and killed by a masked gunman while he sat in a car outside Quality Auto Parts in Castle Coakley.

Shelton Bess, 24, was shot and killed after an argument turned violent in the Camp Rico area. Police arrested and charged Deray Seales, 30, with the crime.

Jan Mary Hooper,39, was found beaten to death in Catherine’s Hope. Police questioned Orlando Baa but have not charged anyone in the murder

Hilton Johnson was killed in Frederiksted . Police charged Arthur Stapelton and Kendall Smith in the case. Both are residents of Williams Delight and are aged 30.

Kaunda Bryan, 25, son of Sen. Adelbert M Bryan, was shot dead in what was apparently an argument during an impromptu horse race. Three suspects in the case, Zacchaeus "Iceman" Blake, 26, Blaine Claxton, 22, and Eugene "Tayo" Williams, 18, turned themselves in to police three days after the murder.

Date of Murder: Sept. 22
Bureau of Correction inmate Miguel Le Bron was stabbed to death at the Golden Grove Correctional Facility. Police charged Carlos Crispin and Luis Lopez with murder. Both are inmates at Golden Grove.

Malik Callwood, 19, of Oswald Harris Court, was found dead inside a rented car in Frydenhoj. He suffered a bullet wound to the head. A 44 magnum was found in the car. No arrests, suspects, motive.

Date of Murder: Oct. 16 (discovered)
A male infant was found in a hamper in the home of the grandmother of a 17-year-old girl who had apparently given birth to the infant. Medical Examiner Dr. Francisco Landron, who performed an autopsy on the body, said the autopsy determined that the child suffocated. He said the case would be classified as murder, whether because of neglect or otherwise.

Date of Murder: Oct. 18
Dimitri Schlessinger was found dead in his Wintberg home of a gun shot to the head. Police suspected he was killed during a robbery attempt.

The body of 13-year-old Alphonso Blyden III was found on the floor at 2-43 St. Joseph and Rosendahl, dead of a gunshot wound to the chest.

Marlon Lambertis, 18, was pronounced dead at Roy L. Schneider Hospital shortly after a friend rushed him there following a shooting during a fight in the Contant Knolls area.

Leander Smith Jr., 32, was gunned down by three heavily armed masked men in a gangland style hit in front of the Charles Harwood Medical Complex. He died at 3 p.m. of multiple gunshot wounds despite wearing a bulletproof vest.

Maria Victoria Santos, 28, the mother of three children, was shot and killed by David Madina , her ex-boyfriend, in her Marley Housing Project apartment at about 2 p.m. following a domestic argument. Madina was charged with first-degree murder and is being held on $1 million bail.

Date of Murder: Nov. 28
Nashuan Van Holten was fatally shot during a domestic violence incident at No. 37 Prindsens Gade . Hours later his brother Earl Anthony Alexander Van Holten was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

Date of Murder: Dec. 8
Egelbert Francis, 47, of Hospital Ground was fatally shot as he entered his home. Francis, also known as "Boggie Pee" was a member of the V.I. Taxi Association. Police had no motive or suspects at the time of the shooting.

Clement Smith, 20, of St. Thomas, died as the result of stab wounds sustained in a fight with another man. Police expected to find out the identity of the assailant within the week.

Two-and-a-half-year-old Rasheem Todman of Tutu died late from injuries sustained in a beating. The child had been treated four months earlier for a broken wrist and burns. According to the report at the time, the police investigation concluded Rasheem’s injuries were accidental. No one has been arrested or charged in the case.

Kenrick Mason, 26, of Smith Bay St. Thomas, died after being shot several times in the parking lot at Market Square East shopping Center, where he was providing security. Police suspect the murder was the result of a failed robbery attempt.

Rudolph Fleming, 20 of Tutu died of a head wound two days after being shot several times in Savan. Police had not arrested anyone in the case.
