Degannes Edges Thompson in Carnival Mile

(Photo by Susan MacFarland-Helton)Shane Degannes and Michael Thompson battled down the stretch, and when they crossed the finish line, Degannes had won the 33rd annual Carnival Mile by a scant second.

Degannes completed Saturday’s event in four minutes, 56 second, compared to Thompson’s time of four-minutes, 57 seconds.

Ruth Ann David took top spot for the women in a time of 5:49.

A total of 75 runners, from children to seniors, completed the mile run. The event was sponsored by the St. Thomas Association of Roadrunners and the Caribbean Surf Company.

The race started at Western Cemetery and followed the adult parade route to Roosevelt Park. Awards were presented to the top male and female and to the first, second and third place finishers in six age categories.

Proceeds from the race will benefit St. Thomas Rescue.
