CARNIVAL MILE DRAWS 107 FUN RUNNERS

April 28, 2001 – One hundred and seven runners, walkers and strollers participated Saturday morning in the 19th annual Gatorade Carnival Mile, which takes the participants from Western Cemetery along Main Street to Roosevelt Park. The winner of the race, dubbed "king of the mile," was 20-year-old Jabari Goodwin from St. Croix in a time of 5 minutes 12 seconds. The women's "queen of the mile" was 14 year-old Tyfia Lee of St. Thomas in a time of 6 minutes 10 seconds. Tyfia, a veteran of this race, was one of a group of young athletes who attend, or have previously attended the Gomez School who make up the Gomez School Track Team. Four of Lee's team mates won awards in their age groups.
Greg Johnson, also of St. Croix, was second overall in 5:16 and won the 40-49 age group. Johnson has won his age group several times in the past. Crucian Teddy Seymour, 59, came in third overall and first in his age group with a time of 5:49. This was Seymour's ninth age group title in the past 10 years. The only time he did not win was when he was unable to attend the race. St. Thomas youngster Madison VanHeurck won the male 12 and under division in a time of 6:22; Ruben Gomez Jr. won the 13-19 with a time of 5:27; Brad Kappel won the 20-29 with 5:44 and Bernard Burke won the 30-39 in 5:42.
In the women's field, Joy Boyd, who has run in all 19 races won the 50 and over division in a time of 14:31. Boyd, a very active senior, plans to participate in a three-day, 60- mile walk in Colorado this summer. Grace Tuma, who recently ran the Boston Marathon, won the 40-49 division in 6:37 and tri-athlete Charlotte Morris won the 30-39 in 6:35. The other women's winners were: Tynequa Lee, 12 & under, 6:56; Charley Charles, 13-19, 6:20; Cirra Turpin 20-29, 8:16.
The race, a fund-raiser for the St. Thomas-St. John Chapter of the American Red Cross, has also become a great family event. Several groups of parents and children have made the event the start of a family outing that includes Parade watching and ends with the fireworks display that closes the Carnival festivities.
