FURLONG MURDER PROBED, MORE SHOOTINGS CITED

March 26, 2001 — A murder investigation entered its second day Sunday into the shooting death Friday night of James "Ska Lion" Furlong in Savan amid reports of other shootings across St. Thomas.
Police Commissioner Franz Christian on Saturday confirmed that Furlong had been shot three times: in the head, back and lower hip. "About 11:46 Friday night, the supervisor of the School Security Unit, Sgt. Elvin Fahie, reported to central dispatch that several shots were fired on Vester Gade in Savan," Christian said.
He said a search of the area turned up the body. Police later discovered that several parked vehicles were damaged by gunfire. Furlong died at the scene, Christian said.
As of Sunday, police had no motive or suspects in the case and had not recovered the murder weapon although law enforcement sources confirmed that at least two guns were used in the shooting. They were unsure whether Furlong had one of the two guns.
Furlong had suffered four gunshot wounds in December in a shooting at the intersection of Gamle and General Gade in Savan.
Christian appealed to the public to come forward with information to assist homicide detectives and said investigators were working around the clock to gather information on the fatal shooting. He asked anyone with information to contact police at 777-8711 or emergency 911.
Furlong's death is the fourth murder on St. Thomas this year and the sixth in the territory. An autopsy is expected to be performed Monday as the murder investigation continues.
In other police news on St. Thomas, an attempted robbery Friday night in Bovoni left a man with a gunshot wound to the leg. Ira Webbe was shot once around 9:30 p.m. Friday night. According to police spokeswoman Sgt. Annette Raimer, three men attempted to rob Webbe near the Texaco gas station in Bovoni when shots were fired. No arrests have been made, she said Sunday night.
There were also reports of at least two shooting incidents late Sunday night. At around 11:50 p.m., police responded to reports of shootings in Savan and near the entrance to Lindbergh Bay.
There was no further information Monday morning on the two shootings.
