DOL Announces Start of Summer Youth Work Experience Program

The V.I. Department of Labor has begun to accept Summer Youth Work Experience applications. It anticipates serving approximately 425 customers, ages 14-25, territory-wide. These numbers may increase due to cost sharing opportunities with other agencies and private sector placements, according to a press release issued Tuesday by the V.I. Department of Labor.
“This year, more than ever, we look forward to the private sector’s involvement in the program, including subsidizing summer job opportunities. We are partners in providing work experience, and consequently, providing for the development of our future workforce. We know that this opportunity not only keeps money in the pockets of our young people, but also provides valuable experience and keeps them productive throughout the summer,” said Commissioner Albert Bryan Jr..
Applications are available on the department’s Web site at www.vidol.gov (under the forms tab) and can be picked up at any of the department’s locations. A Summer Employment Fact Sheet is also available online, providing additional information for participants and parents. This summer, special priority will be placed on participants who have not previously received work experience.
Youths under the age of 18 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian to sign up for participation in the program. All applicants should be able to show proof of enrollment in college, high school, or basic education, as well as proof of citizenship, social security card, photo ID and a copy of a resume, if available.
Employers who may be interested in participating in this year’s Summer Youth Work Experience Program (SYWEP) are asked to contact DOL, which is seeking employers interested in providing a six-week work experience and job training.
Additionally, service providers and organizations interested in providing life skills and career exploration activities for youths ages 14-15 during the summer are also encouraged to contact the department. Programs should run for no more than four weeks. Mini-grants of up to $4,500 are available for qualified providers.
Interested employers and groups can obtain a “Request for Summer Youth Work Experience Program Participation” and “Summer Youth Workshop Application” by contacting the offices on St. Thomas at 776-3700 or 773-1994 on St. Croix, or by visiting www.vidol.gov. Applications can also be picked up at DOL’s St. Thomas and St. Croix locations.
