V.I. Department of Education officials are joining others around the country in National School Counseling Week celebrations, which run from Feb. 6-10. This year’s theme is “School Counselors: Helping Students Be Brilliant,” which is intended to spotlight the contributions made by professional counselors within their respective schools.
”It is not just about preparing students for a career path – that is just one aspect of what we, as school counselors, do,” said Winifred Anthony-Todman, a counselor at the Edith Williams Alternative Academy on St. Thomas. “For us, it is about knowing each student, what their needs are and how to best prepare them for life in general.”
Anthony-Todman said that local school counselors work at building special relationships with each of their students, and help teach them everything from grooming to life skills.
“We each think of our students as our own children, and we take pride in watching them grow and succeed,” she said.
National School Counseling Week is sponsored annually by the American School Counselor Association.
