G-Clef Music Academy Launches $20,000 Public School Student Scholarship Fund

G-Clef Music Academy has launched a new scholarship program fund totaling $20,000 that targets public school children ages 6 to 15. Scholarships are now available for public school students to receive music lessons for half the regular group lesson cost. The Academy is receiving support from several Economic Development Commission (EDC) beneficiaries and sponsors to help public school students take advantage of the cognitive benefits that music offers.

Music has been scientifically proven to “engage practically every area of the brain at once; disciplined, structured practice in playing music strengthens brain functions. Musicians solve problems more effectively and creatively, in both academic and social settings."

"G-Clef, the largest non-profit music education facility, is committed to cultivating a greater learning environment in the St. Thomas community," said Academy Director James H. Gumbs Jr.

The Academy, located on St. Thomas at Mandela Circle in the LaBorde Plaza Building on the second floor, is accepting scholarship applications to place students in its after-school and Saturday Music Academy programs that provide 90-minutes of weekly music education in two instruments. Students can select piano, guitar, singing, violin, drums, and/or steel pan.

Some instruments are offered on certain days of the week. The After-School Music Academy is offered from 3:30-5 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; the Saturday Music Academy has two times for group music lesson at 10-11:30 a.m. and 3-4:30 p.m. The application deadline for the Music Scholarship Program for public school students is Saturday, Nov. 19.

Scholarship recipients, who will be awarded based on financial need, will begin their group music lessons during the week of Tuesday, Nov. 29. The program will run to June 2017. The Scholarship Fund supporters and awardees will be honored at G-Clef’s first Family Fun Day on Jan. 28, 2017, at Yacht Haven Grande.
