Seminar on Tropical Foliage Production Set for Dec. 8 on St. Croix A free seminar on diseases affecting tropical foliage production in south Florida will be offered at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 8, in Room 133 of the Research and Extension Center on UVI’s St. Croix campus. The presenter will be Dr. Aaron Palmateer, a plant pathologist from the University of Florida Tropical Research Station in Homestead.
Florida leads the nation in tropical foliage plant production, accounting for 55 percent of the national wholesale value since the 1960s. The majority of these plants are used for interior decoration and in landscapes throughout warm climates. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the industry with emphasis on economically important diseases and disorders. For more information, contact Dr. Thomas W. Free Holiday Baking Workshops Planned on St. Croix on Dec. 8-9 Free workshops on making sweet breads and fruit cakes are scheduled for Dec. 8 and 9 on UVI’s St. Croix campus. The classes are offered by the 4-H/Family and Consumer Sciences Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program of UVI’s Cooperative Extension Service. Classes will be offered in Room 134 of the UVI Research and Extension Center on the following schedule:
  • Wednesday, Dec. 8 – Sweet Breads – Times: 9 a.m. to noon, and 1-4 p.m.
  • Thursday, Dec. 9 – Fruit Cakes – Times: 9 a.m. to noon, and 1-4 p.m.

Woodworkers’ Expo Sessions Moves to St. John on Dec. 10-12 The fifth annual Virgin Islands’ Woodworkers’ Expo – featuring works from members of the St. Thomas-St. John Woodworkers Society and the St. Croix Wood Artists Inc. group – moves to The Market Place on St. John for sessions on Dec. 10-12. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The expo’s St. Thomas sessions were held Dec. 3-5.
The Woodworkers’ Expo is sponsored by UVI Cooperative Extension Service in partnership with the V.I. Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, the V.I. SBDC Workshop to Outline Impact of Small Business Jobs Act on V.I. on Dec. 14 A free workshop outlining the impact that the recently enacted Small Business Jobs Act will have on small businesses in the Virgin Islands will be offered by the V.I. Small Business Development Center (SBDC) from 2-4 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 14. The session will be hosted at the SBDC Training Center in Sunshine Mall on St. Croix, with a videoconference link to the SBDC Training Center at Nisky Center on St. Thomas.
The new law, signed by President Obama on Sept. 27, will provide critical resources to help small businesses continue to drive economic recovery and create jobs. It extends successful SBA-enhanced loan provisions while offering billions more in lending support, tax cuts and other opportunities for entrepreneurs and small business owners. The Virgin Islands workshop will cover important temporary and permanent features of the act. The presenter will be SBA VI Officer-in-Charge Carl C. Christensen.
While the workshop is free, persons planning to attend are asked to pre-register by calling the SBDC at 692-5270 on St. Croix or 776-3206 on St. Thomas.
UVI’s Music Area to Present Works by African-Diaspora Composers on Jan. 9 The Music Area of UVI’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences will present a performance of music by African-Diaspora composers at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011. Works by R. Nathaniel Dett, Leslie Adams, Lorna C. Young-Wright, Andrés Wheatley, Florence B. Price and Wendell Whalum will be presented. Admission is free. The concert will take place at the Nisky Moravian Church on St. Thomas. The presentation will feature mezzo soprano Janice R. Jackson of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and pianist Lorna C. Young-Wright of UVI.
