Addelita Cancryn Junior High Hosts “For Girls Only” Conference

Addelita Cancryn Junior High will once again host its successful “For Girls Only” conference on Monday, Feb. 4. This year’s program is entitled “STEM: It’s a Girl Thing,” which will focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The event, now in its third year, kicks off at 8 a.m. in the school’s cafeteria with guest speaker Tai C. Hunte, a Cancryn alum and successful doctor of internal medicine and infectious diseases. Breakout sessions will follow from 9 a.m. to noon and will focus in the afternoon on STEM projects, from the construction of solar kits to the behind-the-scenes world of forensic science.
The day will wrap up with a closing session with Raquel Benjamin, the St. Thomas-St. John District’s director of testing.
“The conference is about self-esteem building, etiquette and preparing the girls for success in the academic and professional arenas,” said Cancryn Principal Yvonne Pilgrim. “The conference also helps us re-enforce some of the life lessons that our staff, particularly our guidance counselors, tries to impart
