UVI Labor Day Invitational Volleyball Tournament Opens Today
The UVI Athletic Department will host the 2004 UVI Labor Day Invitational Volleyball Tournament beginning at 6 p.m. today (Friday, Sept. 3) and continuing through Sunday, Sept. 5, at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus.
Eight teams – four representing the U.S.V.I., three from the U.S. mainland and one from the British Virgin Islands – will participate. All matches are free and open to the public.
Associate Athletic Director Curtis Gilpin said "Virgin Islands volleyball fans can expect a high level of play." U.S.V.I. teams involved will include UVI's varsity men's and women's squads, a UVI Club team (men) and Island Mix, made up of V.I. women champions. Two of the stateside squads – the U.S. East Club team, a women's squad, and the U.S. Men's Club team – are both returning to the tournament for the third consecutive year.
A total of 11 matches are scheduled for Friday evening, Saturday morning and evening, and Sunday afternoon. Gilpin added that last year's tournament drew good crowds, especially the Sunday matches.
