LWV TO HOST STEPHANIE SCOTT-WILLIAMS

Stephanie Scott-Willliams will talk about Women for Positive Change at noon Monday at L 'Escargot restaurant in the Sub Base at the monthly meeting of the League of Women Voters.
Since the former senator started the womens' group in August, her campaign has gained momentum daily. Scott- Williams emphasized that 57 percent of the territory's registered voters are women who, according to Board of Elections figures, numbered 29,500 as of August.
Scott-Williams, speaking at a recent meeting, asked, "If we have the power to elect people, why are things so bad in the Virgin Islands?" She said that women should be part of the agenda. "We elect people and we just leave them there scot-free for two years. They have no direction."
Organizers of the group are dispensing surveys asking women to prioritize their top ten concerns, such as health, education, tourism and the economy. The survey will be conducted Fri., Sept. 29 at locations to be announced.
This is only one of the group's projects. On Oct. 5 a Hold On To Your Money Day is planned on all three islands. Scott-Williams said this is not to boycott any stores, but to demonstrate the power of women – which she hopes will continue right on to the polls in November. Her big push is to get women to vote, even if they vote no.
Scott-Williams said the group is not political, it's to get women involved in doing something good for themselves and the community.
