Governor Extends Condolences to Family and Friends of Dr. Secundina Mercado

Upon learning of the death of Dr. Secundina Mercado, Governor John P. deJongh Jr. offered his sympathies to her family and friends. "Dr. Mercado was a valuable member of the Virgin Islands medical profession, providing excellent ophthalmological services to patients throughout the community. She was known for her skill and professionalism. She will be remembered as a beloved wife, mother and grandmother; as a generous supporter of numerous community causes; and as a devout Catholic," he remarked.
Dr. Mercado was born and raised in the Philippines, where she received her education and medical degree. She relocated to New York City in the early 1960s and completed additional training at several hospitals. She was named Chief Resident of Ophthalmology at Elmhurst Mount Sinai Hospital during her years there. In 1961 she married Dr. Cosme B. Barreta, a pediatrician. The couple moved to St. Thomas in 1968 and established independent medical practices.
Dr. Mercado worked for many years at Knud Hansen Memorial Hospital and Roy Lester Schneider Hospital, while maintaining a private practice at The Medical Foundation. She also served on the Board of Medical Examiners and with the V.I. Medical Society, and through her efforts insured that quality medical practitioners were available in the Virgin Islands. She was well-respected and loved by her former patients, her associates in the medical community, and the congregation of Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral.
"Cecile and I extend our sympathies to Dr. Mercado’s husband of 53 years, Cosme; to her daughter Donna and son Danny; to her two grandchildren Christopher and Monica; and to her many friends and admirers. She will be sorely missed by numerous members of our community," the Governor stated.
