Alvara Callwood Dies at 81

Alvara Callwood, better known as “Grandma Callwood,” died on Oct. 17, at her residence. She was 81 years old.
She is survived by her children: Jennifer A. Cardoze-Carr, Gregory A. Callwood, Richard A. Niles, Sherri-Lynn D. Clause, Dr. Michael E. Clause and Shawna R. Callwood; grandchildren: Lisa R. Plaskett-Samuel, Duane Carr, Ley’tisha Carr-Noel, Linda Callwood-Smothers, LaQuise Callwood, Tanya Niles-Callendar, Aaron and Christopher Niles, Andrea Niles-Gillian, Kienema, Tiffani Clause and ReAnna Niles, JaQuan Gumbs, Shawnoree Heyliger, Tishaun Jr., and TiAnna and Tiniya Bute; and great-grandchildren: Acheem Hodge, Chelsie Samuel, Sheniah, Denesha, D Shaune, and Zhade Car, TeAsia Haarmann, Jaden, Joshua, Jordan, Jaeda Smothers, Maiya, Makayla, Mileah and Madsen Callendar, K’noi Lynch, Germaine Petty, and Tony Jr. and Tijah Ortiz.
She is also survived by great-granddaughter-in-law, Loren Niles; sisters: Eileen Robinson and Gloria Petersen; brothers: Alfonso White Sr., Arthur Brown, Elroy Brown, David Brown and Philisiano "Foxy" Callwood; sisters-in-law: Bernice White, Geraldine Brown, Delores Brown, Shelia Brown andTheresa (Tessa) Callwood; brothers-in-law: Charles Robinson Sr. (deceased) and Alvin Petersen; special nieces: Sherry Callwood and Erica Brown; special nephews: Elroy Brown Jr. (Baboo), Eric Brown (Del) and Leroy Brown; adopted son and daughter: Pastor Charles Hurlston and Vera Hurlston; and adopted grandchildren: Charles Hurlston Jr., April Hurlston-Ouannou and Naomi Hurlston-Lima.
Other survivors include nieces: Brenda Lewis, Kimberly Robinson, Dawn Victoria, Michelle Victoria-Bellard, Cheryl White, Germaine White-Auguste, Yvonne White, Diana D. Brown, Debra Brown, Monique Brown, Linda Brown, Tanya Brown-Milliand, Kia Brown, Lia Brown, Justine and Adrianna Callwood; nephews: Elroy Lewis, Charles(Robbie) Robinson, Egedio Victoria, Barry, Ronald and Alphonso White, Richard and Arthur Brown III, Gregory, Dean and Christian, Philisiano (Seddy) and Wendell Callwood; great nieces and nephews too many to mention; special friends: Una Anderson, Elaine McClean, Joseph and Maria Simmonds and family, and Margarita Venzen-Williams; and special pets: Eyore and Chichi; as well as many other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.
There will be a viewing held at 10 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Emanuel Baptist Church. Interment will be at Western Cemetery No. 1.
