Charles I. Wheatley Dies at 95

Charles I. Wheatley

Charles I. Wheatley was born on St. Thomas, USVI, on Sept. 19, 1921.

His parents, now deceased, were Anna C. and Osorio Wheatley. He had nine siblings with two surviving at this time: Henry and Reuben Wheatley. He was married to Ena F. Wheatley (from St. Croix, USVI). They married and lived in Puerto Rico until their respective deaths. His wife has been deceased for over 24 years. Charles had four children: Alice, Anna, Seth and William. Both sons are currently deceased. He had a total of six grandchildren.

Other surviving relatives are his nephews: Dr. Clayton Wheatley, Maurice Wheatley, Randolph Wheatley, Russell Wheatley, Byron Wheatley, Torrance Wheatley and Bertram Wheatley; and nieces: Luana Wheatley, Roxanne Wheatley, Carmen Ambrosio and Angelyn Snelling.

Charles was educated in the public schools in the Virgin Islands, and following graduation from Charlotte Amalie High School, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served as a supply sergeant during World War II. Shortly after World War II, he became a civilian employee of the U.S. Navy at Roosevelt Roads Naval Base in Ceiba, Puerto Rico, and served as fleet liaison officer until his retirement at the age of 71. As a result of his dedication, he received numerous commendations from the Navy and the various ships he served throughout the years.

He had become accustomed to life in Puerto Rico, and he remained to the end in the Fajardo area. He was an avid tennis player during his younger years. Once he injured his knee, he was no longer able to play the game but always followed the tennis matches on TV. Among his other interests was completing crossword puzzles, and he was very good at these. He would also listen to St. Thomas, V.I. radio stations including Sunday Worship services. He believed in staying connected to his roots (St. Thomas).

Charles was basically a very quiet and conservative individual who loved his family on St. Thomas and P.R. He has returned to his place of birth where he will finally rest in peace.

The funeral was held on Thursday, Feb. 16.  Interment took place at Western Cemetery No. 1.

Arrangements are under the care of Hurley Funeral Home and Cremation Center of St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix and Tortola.
