The family informs the public with a heavy heart of the passing of Karen L. Frederiksen, who passed away on Sunday, Feb. 5. The service, will be held at Memorial Moravian Church on St. Thomas on Friday, Feb. 17. Viewing will be held from 9-11 a.m. followed by the service from 11 a.m. to noon. The burial services will start at 1 p.m. at Western Cemetery No. 1 on St. Thomas. 

Karen was born on St. Thomas in 1944 to Alfred Frederiksen and Enid Hansen Frederiksen. She attended the Boynes Elementary School and then Charlotte Amalie High School, from which she graduated in 1961.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in social work from Inter-American University in Puerto Rico, Karen returned to St. Thomas and began her long career as a social worker. She was known as a very competent and caring professional, and she later advance her career by earning her Master’s in Social Work from Adelphi University in 1979.

She is survived by her son, Gianni A. Smalls; daughter, Elnora Frederiksen (adopted daughter ); daughter-in-law, Lynique L. Burnett-Smalls; brothers: Alfred Frederiksen Sr., Andrew Frederiksen and Karl Frederiksen; grandchildren: Chloe’ Meyers (adopted granddaughter), Gianni Caeleb Smalls, Gianna Smalls and Lyanna Smalls; aunt and uncle- in-law: Viusa and Liston Powell; first cousins: Leayle, Leborne, Leann and Liston Powell Jr.; nieces and nephews: Elnora, Alfred Jr., Andre’ (Freddie’s), Karl and Cristina  (Freddie’s), Phnewfula Frederiksen (Andy’s); and great niece and nephew: Taisha J. King (Elnora’s) and Jaeden Allen (Cristina’s).

She is also survived by great-great niece, Tiana Michelle O’Neal (Taisha’s); cousin and cousin-in-law: Ramon (adopted brother) and Vivian Ortiz; great cousin (adoptive nieces and nephews): Sherri L. Ortiz, Vanessa Ortiz Williams, Melissa Ortiz, Julissa Ortiz, Florencio III and Orlando Ortiz, Ramon L. Ortiz Jr. and many more; adopted sisters: Gloria Gawrych, Janet Smith, Diane George, Ardean Turnbull and Marilyn Krigger; godbrother and sister: Erik Jensen  and Marilyn Krigger; and godchildren: Rudolph Krigger, Dilsa Capdeville, Denise, Donna, Deborah Dawson, Galen and Sadeo George, Tarim and Nikita Turnbull.

Other survivors include special friend and relatives: Janet, Rudolph Krigger and daughter, Raymond George, Raymond and Monica Walters, the Plaskett family, the Brutus family, the Burnett family, the Smalls family, Lewis and Marie-Louise Stern, Coreen Moron and family , the Lee family, the Harris family, the Dunlop family, the Roper family, the Simmonds family, the Duncan family, Leroy Smith and family, the Corbiere-Torres family, Staff Sgt. Lorencio Chinnery, C.A.H.S Class of 1961, Vernon Turnbull and extended family, and Charles “Charlie Boo” Todman.

We thank all our extended family and friends, too many to mention. Thank you for your love and support. We are truly grateful.

The family asks that instead of flowers to the home, please send flowers to Memorial Moravian Church on Feb. 17, 2017.
