The Virgin Islands Tennis Association (VITA) will begin a Junior Team Tennis League in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Feb. 4. Four teams of players, age 14-and-under, will compete in the league that will run through May 14. Two teams will be from St. Thomas and two from St. Croix.
The teams will participate in intra- and inter-island matchups, competing for points to be able to travel to Puerto Rico to compete in sectionals. The winner of sectionals would represent the region at nationals. The league is a U.S. Tennis Association (USTA)-sanctioned league, and all participants should be a member of USTA and registered with USTA Team Tennis under Junior Team Tennis VI.
Natasha Lewis-Flynn, V.I. Junior Team Tennis League program coordinator, shared her excitement in spearheading this positive program for the territory’s youth.
“Team tennis is important in encouraging team work, match play, discipline, friendships, etc.,” she said. “VITA is pleased to bring this program to the territory and hope that it can encourage more juniors to play and join the sport.”
The league will begin with 14-and-under, and it has plans to have other age groups from 10-and-under all the way to 18-and-under.
VITA is recognized as a tennis federation by the V.I. Olympic Committee, USTA (U.S. Tennis Assoc.), CTA (Caribbean Tennis Assoc.), and the ITF (International Tennis Federation). A non-profit organization, VITA promotes tennis throughout the U.S.V.I. It supports tennis training, development and tournaments for all levels of play.
