McDonald’s Makes Statement on Recall of Its STEP-IT Activity Bands

McDonald’s (Arco Dorados Co.) announced today that it is working on a voluntary recall of the STEP-IT Activity Bands distributed in Happy Meals on Puerto Rico, Aruba, Curacao, St. Croix and Trinidad. The voluntary recall is a preventive measure following the recall in the United States and Canada after receiving customer reports of skin irritations and burns from wearing the band.
McDonald’s is now asking customers who have the activity bands to stop wearing them and return them to any McDonald’s for a free replacement toy and a free yogurt.
There have been reports of customers affected in the United States, but none from other markets that are conducting the recall.
Approximately 33 million wristbands were manufactured for the U.S. and Canada. Because of the limited dates of distribution and the decision by McDonald’s to stop distributing to customers on Aug. 17, 2016, many of the wristbands had not yet been distributed to customers.
The company wants customers to know that this recall has no impact on other Happy Meal programs.
McDonald’s apologizes to its customers who were impacted and for the inconvenience this recall has caused. At McDonald’s, the highest priority is the safety and well-being of its customers. The company takes great pride in serving its customers around the world every day with safe and high-quality toys.
