King of the Wing Raises More Than $58,000 for V.I. Junior Achievement

Organizers of the 2016 King of the Wing Competition presented a $58,783.01 donation check to nonprofit Junior Achievement of the Virgin Islands at a ceremony at the Charles W. Turnbull Regional Library Friday.

Event organizers White Bay Group and Alpine Securities revealed the donation amount from the annual chicken wing cook-off, which was held June 4th, 2016 on Magens Bay Beach.

This year’s winners in the restaurant division were: Rum Shandy, first place; Vicars Bar & Grill, second place; Fatty’s Bar & Grill/Taco Hell, third place.

In the non-restaurant division winners were: Wolfgang Vincent, first place; Charter Caribe, second place; Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, third place.

The Virgin Islands Olympic Committee walked away with the best decorated booth award while The Smoking Rooster was voted to be Crowd Favorite.

This year’s beneficiary, JAVI, is a charitable 501(c)3 organization dedicated to helping young people in the Virgin Islands gain real world financial skills needed to flourish in today’s global economy, according to a statement from White Bay Group.

JAVI has programs tailored to various education levels from elementary to high school, including after school programs. Since 2010, roughly 3,000 students territory wide, attending both public and private schools, have benefited from the organization’s programs.

The King of the Wing started with fifteen teams in 2010, but the event has rapidly grown and raised over $305,000 in its first six years. This year’s event was the largest to date with more than 7,000 attendees, 41 participating teams and celebrity judges, CS Lee, Chris Oh and Ghost Face Killah.

Teams consisting of local restaurants, businesses, organizations, and chicken wing connoisseurs cooked up mouthwatering chicken wing recipes to wow the attendees and claim bragging rights for the best tasting wings on islands.
