St. Thomas’ Roosevelt Park was filled with the sounds of sizzling Latin jazz, smooth reggae and a variety of musical styles over the weekend as International Capital & Management Company (ICMC) hosted its biggest event to date.
Saturday’s expanded Jazz in the Park installment featured Grammy-nominated percussionist and drummer Bobby Sanabria & Quarteto Aché along with St. Thomas’ own St. Groovus Band.
Songstress Seanise and reggae artist Tia, both from St. Croix, kept the large crowd grooving as residents and visitors moved from booth to booth along Vendors Row, sampling local treats and purchasing arts and crafts. Pam Love, and contemporary inspirational artist Derek Tavernier added their unique, creative, musical flavor to the event.
Adults enjoyed cooking demonstrations, salsa presentations and a ballroom dancing performance by Dancing Classrooms. A special Kids’ Zone featured face-painting, balloon artists, storytelling and special woodwork activities for children of all ages presented by Home Depot.
Attendees experienced live art demonstrations and art classes at the VI Art Walk, and they had fun donning the many entertaining props and adornments at the event’s first ever ICMC photo booth throughout the evening.
Karen Nelson-Hughes, community relations director, said, “Our goal is to keep ‘Jazz in the Park’ exciting for our attendees by adding new segments to each installment, and based on the crowds’ comments and the events’ turn-out, it seems that we did just that.”
Cornel Williams, ICMC president, said, “Jazz in the Park is just one of our initiatives, and we are pleased to say one that has become one of the premier music and community events on St. Thomas that truly brings the community together through music. It was wonderful to see how many attendees came out to enjoy another successful Jazz in the Park.”
The free, expanded Jazz in the Park concert was sponsored by ICMC, the USVI Department of Tourism, Innovative, Barefoot Wines, Budweiser and the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands.
The next Jazz in the Park is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 4.
