2016 Primary and General Elections
(Calendar is based on current state and federal laws as of date of its release. Efforts were made to ensure calendar complies with the law. If in any case the calendar conflicts with state or federal law, those laws control. Calendar is subject to change. Statutes reference the Virgin Islands Code of Laws — "Title 18").
April 2016
April 4, Monday: Forms for filing Nomination Petition/Papers available at all Election System Offices, St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. John
April 10, Sunday: First Day to circulate Nomination Petitions/Papers
May 2016
May 10, Tuesday: First Day on which Nomination Petitions/Papers may be filed after noon
May11, Wednesday: Deadline for political parties to submit to the Supervisor of Election a party emblem to be entered on the format of the ballot as it shall appear on the electronic voting machine.
May 17, Tuesday: Last Day on which Nomination Petitions/Papers may be filed, 6 p.m.
May 18, Wednesday: Deadline for Withdrawal of nominated candidates
May 27, Friday: Deadline for candidates for the same office with similar last surnames to request in writing that the occupation or residence be printed opposite his/her name on the ballot
May 27, Friday: Deadline for filing substitute nomination certificates and papers
May 27, Friday: Casting of Lots for position of names upon the official primary ballot at 5:30 p.m.
June 2016
June 7, Tuesday: First Day for receipt by the Supervisor of Elections of applications for Absentee Ballots for the Primary Election
June 7, Tuesday: Deadline for receipt in Writing by the Supervisor of Elections of their shortened form on which candidates whose name contains more than 22 letters should be listed in the ballot
June 14, Tuesday: Certification of Nominees by the Supervisor of Elections
June 21, Tuesday: All federal ballots to be mailed out to Military and Overseas personnel
June 30, Thursday: Campaign Disclosure Report due
July 2016
July 6, Wednesday: Last Day for Registration
July 6, Wednesday: First Day for Examination of Voting Machines and instruction in use of electronic voting machines
July 6, Wednesday: Last Day to investigate all questions relating to registration of electors
July 6, Wednesday: Last Day for Changes of Enrollment of political parties and Cancellation of Party Enrollment
July 6, Wednesday: Deadline for receipt of Removal Notices and Transfer of Registration
July 16, Saturday: Notice of Primary Election
July 17, Sunday: Deadline for qualified electors to petition the Boards of Elections to cancel the registration of any registered elector for cause shown
July 17, Sunday: Deadline for persons whose applications to be registered has been denied to petition the Board of Elections for review of the matter
July 19, Tuesday: Last Day for receipt by the Supervisor of Elections of applications for Absentee Ballots for the Primary Election
July 27, Wednesday: Deadline for Appeals to the Superior Court by persons whose claims for registration were denied or whose previous registration was canceled and who has exhausted all administrative remedies
July 28, Thursday: Testing of electronic voting machines and tabulating equipment, certification by Boards. Open to General Public and Media
August 2016
August 2, Saturday: PRIMARY ELECTION DAY
August 7, Thursday: Registrars in the Election System of the Virgin Islands Commence Registration
August 23, Tuesday: Casting of Lots for position of names upon the official election ballot at 5:30 p.m.
August 26, Friday: In case of a tie vote at the primary election, the candidates receiving the tie vote shall cast lots before the Supervisor of Elections at noon.
September 2016
September 6, Tuesday: First Day for receipt by the Supervisor of Elections of applications for Absentee Ballots for the General Election
September 16, Friday: All Federal Ballots to be mailed to Military and Overseas personnel
October 2016
October 2, Sunday: Last Day for Registration
