APA to Hold Seminar on Ethical Decision-Making

May 23, 2007 – The Association of Virgin Islands Psychologists will hold a continuing education workshop on "Ethical Decision-Making" from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Friday, June 8, at the Kimelman Auditorium, Schneider Regional Medical Center.
The seminar, designed for professionals working with adults and children in the mental health field, will be presented by Dr. Stephen H. Behnke, director of the APA's Professional Ethics Office. He has earned a Juris Doctorate Degree from Yale Law School, and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Michigan.
The program will emphasize how psychologists, social workers, nurses, counselors lawyers and others who work with confidential information can use the APA Ethics Code to promote principled decision-making in the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic disorders. In addition, guidelines for protecting a client's ethical and legal rights — as well as ways to minimize exposure to ethical violations that may lead to personal and professional liability claims — will be addressed.
Behnke was chief psychologist of the Day Hospital Unit at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center. He held this post until 1998, when he was named a Faculty Fellow in Harvard's program in 'Ethics and the Professions'. After completing this fellowship he directed a program in Research Integrity at Harvard Medical School's Division of Medical Ethics. In 2000, he assumed the position of Director of Ethics at the American Psychological Association.
His research interests focus on topics involving the convergence of law, ethics, and psychology. He has written on multiple personality disorders and the insanity defense, as well as issues involving competence and informed consent in therapeutic treatment and research, and on the forced treatment of the severely mentally ill.
Pre-registration fees for AVIP Members and Schneider hospital staff are $50; other professionals will be charged $75; college students are invited to attend for $25. Attendance is limited, so sign up early to hold a seat and avoid an additional $10 registration fee at the door. Continental breakfast and lunch are included in the price.
Continuing Education credits will be available for those who need professional development training certificates for their licensure renewal.
For more information and pre-registration forms, contact Dr. Ramona Moss at 775-1103 or Dr. Tom Tyne at 776-3663 or e-mail them at rjmoss@attglobal.net, or tomt@surfvi.com.
